FROM penning critically-acclaimed folk-tinged albums to earning plaudits on stage and screen, there's little Johnny Flynn cannot turn his hand to and excel.

The singer-songwriter and actor is starring in ITV's eagerly-anticipated adaptation of the 19th century novel Vanity Fair – here's everything we know about him.

Who is Johnny Flynn?

Johnny Flynn was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on March 14 1983, and moved to the UK when he was two, growing up in London, Hampshire and rural Wales.

His half-brother Jerome Flynn had three UK number one singles as one half of Robson & Jerome, before becoming an international acting star as Bronn in Game of Thrones.

As a young boy, Johnny was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which left him with scarring on his face.

He won music scholarships to Pilgrims School and Bedales School, both in Hampshire, where he sang in the choir and learned to play the guitar, violin and trumpet.

Johnny studied acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, and was named one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow in 2005, alongside Natalie Dormer and Dominic Cooper.

He got his first breaks as an actor with roles in Holby City and Murder in Suburbia, and starred in 2006's Dutch-produced English language indie film Crusade in Jeans.

As a musician, he formed the folk rock band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit in 2006, releasing their debut album A Larum in 2008.

The critically-acclaimed LP earned Johnny the label of "the next poster boy of the nu-folk scene" from The Times.

As well as going from strength to strength in music, TV and film, the 35-year-old has more than proved his worth as a stage actor.

He performed Shakespeare with the all-male Propeller theatre company, and in 2011 starred in two hit plays – The Heretic and Jerusalem.

For the former he was longlisted for best newcomer in the Evening Standard and What's On Stage Awards, and scooped an Olivier Award nomination for the latter.

More recently, he starred in a hit off-Broadway production of Martin McDonagh's play Hangmen.

Johnny married his wife, theatre designer Beatrice Minns, in 2011, and the couple have two children together – a son and a daughter.

What are Johnny Flynn's biggest songs?

Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit's debut album A Larum – released under Johnny's name alone – earned favourable reviews, described as "utterly engaging" by the NME.

The lyrics of The Wrote and the Writ, a standout track from the LP, is referenced in the opening lines of Alt-J's single Matilda: "Just like Johnny Flynn said, 'the breath I've taken and the one I must' to go on".

In total the band have made five albums, the most recent of which was Sillion, released in 2017.

Johnny has also collaborated on the EP "Fee Fie Foe Fum" with Laura Marling, another star of the UK's modern folk scene, and wrote the entire score to the BBC comedy Detectorists, including the theme tune.
