It's hump day, which often can be the toughest day of the working week, so it makes sense if you're struggling with Wordle today.
The daily puzzle resets at midnight in whatever location you're in, with a new five-letter mystery word that players have to guess in six attempts or less. They're helped along by colored tiles that tell them if they're on the right track or not. Green tiles indicate a correct letter, yellow means the letter appears in the word but is just in the wrong spot, while gray signifies the letter does not appear in the word at at all.
Its appeal is in its simplicity, with many experts suggesting to start with words that contain popular letters such as S, T, and E.
"One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting letter chosen," Erhan Aslan, an expert in applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the U.K., shared with Newsweek. "Starting off with letters that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful."
After going public in 2021, a number of games inspired by Wordle popped up online including geography based games such as Worldle and Flagle, battle royale Squabble, song identification game Heardle, and other word puzzles such as Dordle and Quordle.
It became such a phenomenon three years ago that not only did it inspire similar games but The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in 2022. There is even a trend on social media, especially TikTok, where users try to solve the puzzle on live stream as their followers watch on.
